The Armchair World Traveler

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving (Lao Tzu, Chinese traveler). Now whether you want to do a spot of armchair traveling, or plan a family trip, or even catch up on your knowledge of world geography and culture, then you must be a subscriber to at least one travel magazine. Many people fall in the first category, and they have more knowledge than most frequent flyers. Take Herge, for example, the man who created Tintin. He never set foot out of his country his entire life, but he sent Tintin everywhere. And how did he know where to send him? Armchair traveling to the rescue!

Not all of us are minting money, and we would want to know how to make a weekend worthwhile, beyond the neighbor’s Sunday barbeque, or a visit to the grandparents. Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel Magazine is, then, for you. It lists the hottest spots, resorts and tourist attractions, worldwide. And yes, these places are accessible to the most penny-wise traveler.

The US of A is a marvelous country. There is plenty to see and it has the best roads possible. If you missed out on a road trip during your college days, we suggest you subscribe to the American Road Magazine. This magazine will give you the history of America’s historic highways, and the events and the people associated with them.

Does your business often require you to travel? Are you the type who has a collection of overnight attaches? There is one magazine dedicated entirely to many business people is the Business Traveler Magazine. The articles in this magazine will not waste your time with tempting offers and vacation ideas, but will give you the update on the most feasible business offers in resorts and hotels, so that you can plan your out-of-town seminars or business lunches without running into holidaying families or relatives.

What if you are not willing to while away your time even when you are abroad? Do you believe that the only way you can learn about the culture of another country is by living the way the natives do, even if it is for two weeks? Then Transitions Abroad Magazine is the periodical for you. It has information on vacation jobs, accommodation, voluntary work, as well as living with local families.

However, if all you want is a luxurious vacation, and you can afford it, then the Cruise Travel Magazine is your guide. It may just have some affordable prices listed for a short cruise. Itineraries and ports-of-call are listed here, and you can look forward to a great time without any worries. Just plan like they tell you to.

If you are a serious travel magazine buff, then your month is incomplete without the most revered National Geographic Traveler Magazine. This is the magazine that teaches you the art of traveling, with its fascinating stories from across the globe. No trip to Europe or the Bahamas is complete without prior advice from National Geographic.

And if you want to really live it up, and add excitement and adventure to your holiday, then the National Geographic Adventure Magazine is for you. You can live vicariously as a biker, cross-countries across Australia, or as a team of college footballers climb the Everest.

Existing Wonders of the World Travel Spots and Travel Shots

The original Wonders of The World are all lost to history save the Great Pyramid at Giza. Yet this does not make the world a less wondrous place to travel. In fact, there are countless wonders still to behold, from natural to the man made. Often times, merely traveling to and from places of destination allows us to stumble across our own brand-new wonders. Travel also triggers in us a sense of preservation, from wearing a money belt to getting our travel shots. Here is a list of some “new” wonders of the world (not including that chick we see every morning getting on the subway).

Christ The Redeemer (Brazil)

This is one BIG Jesus. At 130 feet tall, the statue is reportedly the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world. With arms outstretched (a full 98 feet wide), the human figure also resembles the Christian cross. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, its head and right arm were sprayed with graffiti in 2010. Not to be outdone in the drama department, Mother Nature took a swipe at the statue also. In 2008 the fingers and head were damaged when the gigantic statue was hit by lightening—on of all days, a Sunday.

The Coliseum (Italy)

This Roman amphitheater was built by emperor Vespasian and its construction was completed before the year 100. The Coliseum was used to entertain the citizens of Rome, in much the same way that our stadiums do today. In doing so, it held war reenactments, gladiatorial competitions, executions and was also able to be safely flooded to stage mock sea battles! Beats a Dave Mathews concert any day.

Taj Mahal (India)

Surely one of the most recognizable structures in the world, its construction employed hundreds of artisans and craftsmen and lasted approximately twenty years, ending in 1653. The legendary Taj Mahal is said to be the world’s most romantic valentine. It was built in memory of Shah Jahan’s third wife and stands forever, stoic, silent and as a physical representation of eternal love. Wonder what that says about the first two wives…

Great Wall of China (Duh)

This series of stone and earthen fortifications, built to protect China’s borders from invaders, stretches a mind-boggling 5,000 miles! The wall is not one long snaking complete structure; pieces were built at different times and by different emperors. The first emperor himself, Qin Shi Huang, begin it in approximately 220 BC. Although it is widely believed, the Great Wall of China cannot be seen from outer space. In fact, one of China’s own astronauts said so himself. Whereabouts of that astronaut cannot be verified at this time.

This is just a smidgen, a tiny little speck of the wondrous places that exist on earth. Whenever traveling remember to protect oneself—and that includes travel shots, traveler’s checks and hopefully a good-looking traveling companion. For travel shots visit a certified travel clinic, for traveler’s checks any bank will do, for a good-looking traveling companion you’ll have to be more assertive. And that does NOT mean placing an ad on Craigslist.

New Yorkers fear not, for there is a highly qualified travel clinic located just two blocks from Grand Central Station ready to administer those travel shots you will be needing. Log onto Travel Vaccinations NYC and find out what it is a NYC Travel Clinic can do for you besides travel shots. Hasta la vista, baby…and good luck with that traveling companion.

Walt Disney World – Traveling With Teens

Disney’s Boardwalk Inn is an Epcot area resort that along with its Disney Vacation Club sister resort, Disney’s Boardwalk Villas, offers a fun and exciting vacation experience for families with children of all ages especially teenagers.

It has been our family’s experience that if the children are not kept busy, boredom sets in quickly. One would think that spending the day in one of Disney’s four theme parks would satisfy their need to go and do, but even after running around in one of the parks for 8-10 hours the children still want to know what they will be doing next. Although mom and dad may want to relax a bit, the children want to keep busy.

The Boardwalk Inn and Disney’s Boardwalk Villas has become our favorite resorts because both offer plenty of activities and entertainment opportunities that will keep everyone busy so that we never have to hear the children say “I’m bored.”

So what do the children like to do to keep busy when we are not in a park? Usually, the first thing everyone wants to do at the resort is to swim. The resort’s main pool is located on the Villas side of the property. It is called The Luna Park Pool and it has a 200 foot water slide called Keister Coaster. It is a recreation of a 1920s roller coaster. The slide empties into the pool through the mouth of a clown with the slide as the clown’s tongue. The pool is colorful, exciting and it provides enough fun to keep the children busy for several hours.

In addition to the pool, The Boardwalk Inn and Villas also offer other free activities like tennis, a small playground, and a fitness center. There are other activities that cost extra that can be enjoyed as well. There are two arcades on the property. The biggest is at the ESPN Club located on the Boardwalk.

One activity that we enjoy as a family is renting a surrey bike. The rental stand is located on the Boardwalk just beyond the courtyard area of the resort known as the Village Green. You can rent a 2, 4 or even a 6 seat surrey bike to take for a ride along the Boardwalk and around the ¾ mile walkway that circles Crescent Lake. The walkway has plenty of small hills and even a few not so small hills that make it lots of fun and sometimes a bit of a challenge for those who are pedaling the bike. Most of the time our family ends up laughing so hard after struggling with the smaller hills that we have to get off and push the bike in order to make it up the larger hills. This experience provides us with some good old fashioned family fun and enough memories to share for years to come.

Even though we enjoy all of these activities, we especially like to walk around the boardwalk at night. The sight of bright neon lights, the sounds of midway games, the energy of the live entertainers and the smell of the food coming from the restaurants and the venders all combine to make the Boardwalk come to life with an energy and excitement that only Disney could create.

So the next time you want to take your family on a vacation where the children will be occupied and entertained consider going to Walt Disney World and staying on property at The Boardwalk Inn or Disney’s Boardwalk Villas. Not only do these two resorts offer fun and exciting activities and recreation opportunities they have the added benefit of being conveniently located next to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and at the International Gateway entrance into Epcot.

Dana Medlock and her family of five love to vacation at the Walt Disney World Resort. Everyone in the family loves Disney World and they share this passion on their web site

World Travel: Holiday Gone Bad

There are a lot of reported cases of tempting holidays gone really, really bad. People, who got to the destination and found out that the hotels were miserable or that there simply were no hotels where they should have been, people who had to pay a lot of extra money for things they already paid for and so on.

So in order to prevent these unfortunate happenings you’d better start looking for a travel agent who will help you to make the best decision that meets your desires when it comes to traveling somewhere. Find an agent who has a lot of experience and can determine scams in time. He should be a person you fully trust as in his hands lies your long wanted holiday.

Before deciding for one, ask about his reputation. If possible, contact some of his former clients and check if they had things going for them as they wanted or who knows, even better. Choose and agent who can meet all your conditions, involving destination, hotel, family accommodation, prices for your budget and any special needs. Think outside the box: bigger aren’t necessarily better. You can get really good service from smaller agencies as well.

Check if the agent is available anytime in case of an emergency. You have to rely on him that he will solve any issues that might occur. Look for someone with whom you’ll be able to establish a long time relationship, someone nice who isn’t interested just to take your money but who is committed to his job and tries as hard as he can to make you happy. He has to be up to date with the best offers and prices.

Having a good agent means that you will be able to save some money, time and you’ll get to your wanted destination having your mind relaxed.

At the end, I’d like to share cool website with more details on topics like travelers journal and questions that matter. Visit for more details.
