Getting the right travel insurance for your Easter break

Getting the right travel insurance for your Easter break

So far, the first few months of 2009 have thrown households across the UK some tough challenges. In addition to the usual post-Christmas comedown, people have been plagued by extreme winter weather conditions and an almost constant flow of gloomy news about the state of the world economy. As a result, the advent of the long Easter Weekend in mid-April is sure to have many families champing at the bit for a short break away from the drone of everyday life.

And no matter what the state of your finances, you’re sure to be able to find an affordable break if you search in the right places. For instance, if money is short, an excursion to a local beauty spot or a visit to see friends on the other side of the country is sure to be an attractive – and relatively inexpensive – option. At the same time, if you’re tempted to go abroad, many travel agents and budget airlines are offering great deals on flights and accommodation in Europe, so you could bag a short break abroad for less than you might think. But wherever you’re going, there’s one thing you can’t do without: travel insurance.

Don’t underestimate the importance of travel insurance

Travel insurance might seem like an extra cost you can forgo, especially at times when money is tight. But the benefits offered by travel cover almost always outweigh its relative costs – especially on a short weekend break. For instance, if you’re travelling from London to Manchester for a short break over the Easter Weekend, obtaining travel insurance for your trip might not at first seem like a necessity. However, travel insurance for UK breaks often works in much the same way as overseas holidays – so if you should lose your personal possessions or suffer a theft, your loss will be covered. What’s more, if your flight or train back from Manchester is delayed or cancelled – which, let’s face it, is a very real possibility in Britain – your travel cover could pay out for the time you’ve lost.

On the other hand, families, groups and couples taking short breaks overseas over the Easter Weekend may remember to take out travel insurance before embarking on their trip, but they could also opt for the very cheapest option in order to save money. While a low level of coverage is better than no travel insurance at all, it’s crucial to ensure that you opt for the policy that meets your personal needs. For instance, a European travel insurance policy may cover you in the event that your flight is delayed or if you have to unexpectedly cancel your trip – but does it offer you protection if the airline with which you’re flying goes into liquidation? In today’s economic climate, there’s a high chance that this may happen, and though a travel insurance policy that does cover such an outcome may cost more, the fact that it will cover the cost of your alternative travel arrangements certainly makes it worthwhile.

Ensuring that you make the most of your money when buying travel cover

With a little help from travel insurance experts and insurance comparison sites, you’ll be able to find travel insurance with levels of cover that suit both you and your bank balance. Moreover, today’s technological advances mean that it’s easy to buy travel insurance direct from websites in just a few clicks – so you’ll have no excuse to delay buying travel cover before the Easter break.

The Best Way to Travel on a Budget

Well you won’t be traveling to Monaco and staying at a five star resort on a budget, will you? Maybe so!  Mostly, traveling on a budget means finding the cheapest price for the experience you want.

When traveling on a budget it’s best to keep in mind the following points:

1. Travel in the off-peak seasons. You can save up to as much as fifty per cent off air flights and accommodation costs if you plan to travel in low season times.

2. Stay away from popular tourist spots (unless they are on your ‘must-see’ list). If you can go off the beaten track with your destinations, things can be cheaper to see and do and your cultural experiences will be richer.

3. Try camping. Not only is it the cheapest form of accommodation it’s a great way to get up close and personal to nature. It’s the best way to see National Parks and Heritage listed areas.

4. Look for special travel offers (or packages). But make sure you check everything that they include – and don’t include.

5. Invest in a travel pass where you are able. Most developed countries have a rail or bus transport system where you can obtain day, week or monthly passes that will get you around cheaply.

6. Get a work permit if you aim to gain employment while traveling overseas. Working can help subsidize places that aren’t so cheap, such as Europe and Australia.

7. Look for good exchange rates on the dollar. This may help you decide which country to travel to.

8. Think about shortening your visit to destinations that are expensive and increasing your length of stay in cheaper places.

9. Where possible use your credit card. The exchange rate is better.

10. When staying in a hotel, avoid paying for ‘extras’. Don’t touch anything from the honor bar. Don’t watch the in-house movies and don’t use the hotel phone. And try not to use room service too much!

On the world scene there are some great places to travel on a budget for under thirty dollars a day. In Asia you can try India, Laos, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand, Sumatra and Burma. In Central and South America you can visit El Salvador, Bolivia and Ecuador. If you are after a budget experience in the Pacific, try Fiji or New Zealand. Over in Africa there are some great budget destinations such as Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Ghana. Don’t forget the Middle East where places like Iran, Syria and Turkey provide excellent value for money and wonderful experiences for the budget traveler.

There is no ‘best place’ to travel on a budget. Just be prepared to look around, avoid the pitfalls of unwanted costs in package deals or hotel bookings. If you want to travel and your budget doesn’t meet your expectations, be flexible and see if there is somewhere cheaper you might like to experience. You could be pleasantly surprised with your stay in India or Iran, when you thought you wanted to go to Tahiti.

Holiday Travel Insurance – Why You Need It

We have all faced the question, would you like to purchase holiday travel insurance? Many of us, myself included, are thinking well why would I want to spend more money on that? I know that I am travelling on this particular date, my vacation time is booked and there is nothing that is going to stop me.

Let’s think about this…

The thing about travel is that many times, no matter how far ahead we have booked or how well planned, there are many unexpected things that can occur, some may be minor things and some may not. Maybe you’ve experienced setbacks yourself.

Have you ever considered what would happen if;

1) My travel supplier just declared bankruptcy

Considering all the new travel companies that are popping up every day, not all of them are as financially stable as we think. Having trip cancellation travel insurance and trip interruption insurance can protect you and your vacation investment.

2) I’ve become ill and I’m too sick to travel

Many tickets and vacations are non-refundable. If you or another family member suddenly becomes ill, having trip cancellation travel insurance and trip interruption insurance allows you to be fully reimbursed should such a situation occur.

3) You’ve missed your flight connection due to flight delays

There are times (don’t I know it!) that you arrive at your connecting city but your connecting flight is long gone. You may need a hotel and meals for the night, or you’ve booked a cruise but your cruise ship has left, what do you do?! Having travel delay protection will cover the costs relating to your delay.

4) My wallet or purse has just been stolen

Here is a very real fear that most of us don’t like to think about but unfortunately, even in the best of places, theft can occur. Knowing that there are 24 hr emergency services on hand to assist with reporting lost cards and having emergency funds ready to transfer ensures that help is always just a phone call away.

5) Holiday Travel Insurance covers you where your Health Insurance may not

Medical emergencies can occur when you are visiting a foreign destination. Without travel health insurance coverage, you would be responsible for footing the bill, and chances are, it’s not going to be a small amount!

These are just some of the many reasons you may want to consider before declining that offer for holiday travel insurance. If you are booking online as many people are doing these days, take a look for an online travel insurance company that can offer you a solution. Make sure to look for travel insurance comparisons, you will be able to find cheap holiday travel insurance.

Always remember that travelling is one of the best things in the world, but as with all good things, there are always unexpected circumstances that can arise. Holiday travel insurance may be one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family. For a small fee and the right insurance travel plan products, you can be rest assured that you are completely covered to fully enjoy that vacation!
